Evergreen shrub in mild climates, deciduous where it freezes intensely (drives back from the trunk) with very rapid growth, it can reach 250 cm. It has colored leaves that are grey-green on the upper surface, and a showy velvety purple underneath. The leaves give off a peppery scent when crushed and drop as they age as fresh ones emerge. From summer to autumn to winter (all year round in mild locations) the delicate small lavender-purple flowers appear in 25 cm long panicles at the branch tips followed by small rounded berries. Fairly drought tolerant once established. Flowering on new branches can be pruned repeatedly to be kept small.
