Ipheion uniflorum

The grey-green waxy foliage is topped in March and early April, at least for 6 weeks, producing a long succession of magnificent light blue flowers that obscure the foliage. By the end of May, Ipheion become dormant for the summer, they are summer dormant and tolerate drought during the dormant period; they resume growth in autumn and grow during the winter months until spring. It is an excellent plant for filling spaces left free in winter by large herbaceous perennials or under deciduous shrubs. Two different plants thus occupy the same space, subletting it in opposite vegetative seasons; the frost-resistant Ipheion during the winter growing season and the others during the frost-free growing season. Using this method, a double amount of plants is therefore created in the same space. Like all bulbous plants, it does not like water stagnation. It requires no maintenance. However, every few years the clumps can be divided and replanted to form larger masses.
